Fasting

Fasting is a simple way of allowing the body to take a break from some of its continuous routines. Fasting is very cleansing to the body because it induces a detoxing of wastes and toxins that are perhaps overwhelming the body and not being eliminated in a proper way. These short detoxes are used by the body to breakdown and excrete the toxin burden it is carrying. Periodic fasts of a day or two maintain the body’s good health by allowing it this opportunity to detox. It facilitates a healthy weight, and promotes faster healing. It clears up newly developing illness by stimulating the immune system. Along with proper diet and exercise it promotes well-being within the body.

Benefits of healthy periodic fasts include these safeguards against poor health.

  • Reduced risks of immune disorders.
  • Reduced risks of cancer.
  • Reduced risks of  cardiovascular diseases.
  • Reduced risks of diabetes and insulin resistance.
  • Cleanses the liver and kidneys.
  • Purifies the blood.
  • Cleanses the colon. 
  • Get rid of toxin build-up in tissues.
  • The slowing of the aging process and the potential to increase maximum life span.

Tips on Fasting

Switching to a  raw food diet will benefit one’s health. Even if a raw food diet is not one’s personal choice eating only raw foods for two days before and two days after the fast will benefit the body. During the fast one can “cheat” if necessary but only eat organic raw fruits like pureed apples with the skins. Nutrition is derived from the juice of organic fruits and vegetables. Do not fast on water only. Juices of vegetables will bypass the digestion process, which is the goal, and will be quickly absorbed in the intestine.

Fasting and Fiber

Many juice fasts are excellent at causing the body to detox. The ingredients in them have antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and many other ingredients to provide proper nutrition and to cleanse the body. What most are lacking is proper dietary fiber. This is what is needed to sweep the toxins and pathogens from the colon wall. These traditionally used colon cleansers are gentle and safe to use during a fast.

  •  Triphalia (Colon sweeper) follow the recommended dosage on the bottle.
  • Psyllium is another effective colon cleanser. Mix 1 tablespoon in 8 oz of filtered water or juice. Mix and drink immediately. Psyllium gels rather quickly so drink it after mixing.

For mild liver detox while fasting one may drink fresh lemon juice with warm water.

Fasting and Juicing

Juices to drink while fasting should be made in a juicer.  Juices from cabbage, beet, carrot, celery, grape, and apple juice. Any green drinks you make from juicing leafy green vegetables are also fine. These are excellent detoxifiers. Superfood additives such as spirulina, wheatgrass, chlorella should be added to the juices during a fast also. The goal is not starvation or poor nutrition. It is to bypass the digestive process while taking in more than adequate nutrition.

Warning

Fasting over three days should be supervised by a qualified health physician. Diabetics should never fast unless under a doctor’s supervision.  One should continue to take vitamins and supplements while on the fast. One might want to reduce the dosage of supplements when you are drinking juices.

More Juicing Ideas for Fasting

Here are ingredients for an excellent broth or juice to drink when one is fasting. Use a juicer to prepare. Another option is to dice all ingredients finely. Add to non-aluminum pot with 6 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then gently simmer for 20 minutes. Turn off heat. Allow to steep for 15 minutes. Use only organic non-GMO/GM produce.

  • 3 carrots
  • 1 turnip
  • ½ head of cabbage
  • ¼ onion
  • 2 stalks of celery
  • 2 beets
  • ¼ bunch parsley
  • ½ clove garlic

I have found the subject covered in an easily understood and well crafted book called “Detox Strategies” by Brenda Watson C.N.C. The material in her book is very comprehensive and beyond listing the ingredients for the various detox recipes Brenda Watson has also put together a brand of supplements that have been formulated by her. Herxheimer Reaction

Warning: One may suffer a worsening of certain symptoms during the use of many treatments and especially during cleanses. This is a short-term detoxification reaction in the body. This reaction is known as the Herxhiemer Reaction. This is a natural response to toxins and pathogens that are released when parasites, fungi, viruses, bacteria and other pathogens  are being effectively killed off and the body does not effectively eliminate the toxins quickly enough.

Methods of Relieving Herxheimer Reactions

  • Drink plenty of filtered water.
  • Add vitamin C to regimen.
