Sleep & Immunity
Sleep deprivation and poor quality of sound sleep increase the likelihood of
illness. This is in part due to the impairment of the immune system. In a
healthy functioning immune system, part of the cadre of antibodies within the immune
system are the T-cells. These cells are part of a group called white blood cells that the body uses to keep pathogens and disease in check. Poor sleep contributes to the reduction in T-cell antibodies. Fatigue and sleep deprivation also can cause inflammation through the increased production of the hormone cortisol. Sleep deprivation causes a decrease the body’s ability to respond to colds or bacterial infections. It causes a suppression in function of the immune system.
Poor Sleep Affects Fever Response
Proper Sleep is tied to an immune system response known as fever response. The body is set to combat illness and infections through this response but if it doesn’t have the proper sleep, the fever response is not properly initiated when needed. When this happens we are more susceptible to infections. There is also an increased production in the body of C-reactive proteins which is a marker for heart disease.
Morgellons and Sleep Disorders
See a Doctor if the factors contributing poor sleep include sleep apnea, insomnia or other related sleep disorders. The focus of this post is not to diagnose or treat those particular ailments. This post is concerning the ill effects of Morgellons symptoms on a healthy sleep routine. These symptoms vary though the following list contains some common sleep issues that Morgies may have.
- Lack of a sound sleep routine
- Anxiety or stress concerning sleep
- Unrelenting symptoms that interfere with sleep like crawling sensations, itching and biting.
- Lack of a routine that mitigates the symptoms affecting sleep deprivation.
Tips for Better Sleeping
- Set a Sound Sleep Cycle Establishing a set schedule that one follows nightly. This is greatly enhanced if one can follow the Circadian Rhythm. These cycles are internal programs of the body that follow the cycles of nature. Rest when the sun sets. Wake when the sun rises.
Relieving Sleep Related Stress Lowering one’s caffeine, nicotine and alcohol intake. This is especially important to follow in the afternoon. A brisk walk is an excellent way to reduce stress and tire out the body physically. This aids in sound sleep.
- Adopting a Routine to Deal with Morgellons Symptoms Topical treatments such as Baths or Sulfur Soap treatments along with cleaning the bed with Environmental Cleansing treatments may aid in alleviating these symptoms. Clean synthetic material sheets and protective zippered bedding (plastic or vinyl) will also aid in this area. This may include daily laundering of sheets and blankets. Acrylic blankets seem more resistant to “infestation”.
Some Additional Aids
Enzymes in a Spraybottle
If the symptoms discussed are severe especially during set sleeping hours, the use of an Enzyme product diluted 1:7 with water may be kept bedside in a small personal spray bottle. One quickly becomes used to spraying the itching and biting attacks during the night.
Similar to the above mentioned enzyme spray.
Using a Vaporizer and Essential Oils
Vicks makes an inexpensive vaporizer that one may add essential oils like Thieves’ Oil blend, Neem, Peppermint or Lavender. This should be done while one is bathing or showering for the night.
When I had severe sleeping issues dues to symptoms I found relief with these easy to make and use body products. I also treated my bed and bedding with Diatomaceous Earth and use these Environmental Cleanses on my bed and bedding.
Melatonin & The Circadian Rhythm
The circadian rhythm governs the body’s production and release of melatonin. Melatonin is a sleep hormone that is secreted by the pineal gland. During daylight hours melatonin production is low. During night-time hours melatonin production is higher which aids in sound sleep. Melatonin is also available as tablets, capsules, cream, and lozenges that dissolve under the tongue. I prefer this sleep aid over others because it is very effective and it is easy to function the next day without side effects. Melatonin also has strong antioxidant effects and boosts the immune system. There is no current recommended dosage for Melatonin so begin with small amounts. It is extremely effective and fast acting.
If sleeping habits are poor a power nap is very effective at refreshing one physically and mentally as well. Use the same techniques written above to create a quiet peaceful environment and enjoy.
Amount of Sleep
Sleep is essential for a healthy immune system. One must make every effort to listen to one’s body and get the proper amount of sound sleep. This appears to be a different amount for each individual. However most sleep research studies suggest between 7 and 9 hours per night. Everyone must find a way to get the proper amount of sleep and stop the unhealthy effects of sleep deprivation.
Pleasant dreams to all.
